Our Mission

We exist to support a cleaner, healthier marine environment in and around Iceland by creating a central hub for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and practical solutions. Our mission is to connect individuals, organisations, researchers, and communities who are working to reduce marine litter at every stage, from prevention and science to policy, innovation, and hands-on cleanups.

Through two interconnected databases, one mapping experts, the other cataloging organisations, we make it easier to find the right knowledge and partners. The platform provides open access to research, tools, events, and resources, encouraging everyone to contribute their own findings and methods. By lowering barriers to information, we aim to prevent duplication, strengthen cooperation, and amplify the impact of marine litter efforts across Iceland and beyond.

We believe that tackling a complex challenge like marine pollution requires collective action, and that better outcomes are possible when knowledge flows freely and people work together.

Our Vision

We envision a future where Iceland’s marine and coastal environments are resilient, thriving, and safeguarded from the growing threat of litter and plastic pollution. In this future, no initiative works in isolation: efforts are coordinated, data is shared openly, and decisions are informed by both local expertise and global best practices.

The hub is more than a digital database: it is a living, inclusive community where individuals and organizations can learn from one another and drive towards effective and lasting change. Starting from Iceland, the network will gradually expand outward, connecting Arctic neighbors and eventually becoming part of a truly global platform against marine litter. By linking local efforts with international actors, the hub will turn scattered knowledge into a collective force for ocean stewardship.

Over time, the network can host thematic collections, highlight innovative practices, and offer opportunities for collaboration. Future activities may include webinars, working groups, and joint funding initiatives, all building on the foundation of open knowledge and cooperation.

Our vision is a dynamic, cooperative network that grows beyond borders, reflecting both the urgency of ocean stewardship and the strength of collaboration in the 21st century.
