About us

Ocean Missions is a small Iceland-based non-profit dedicated to protecting the Arctic seas through science, education, and community involvement. Based in Húsavík, a town best known for whale watching, the organization combines research expeditionscitizen science, and awareness-raising activities. Their mission is simple but ambitious: to connect people with the ocean, document the threats it faces, from marine litter to climate change, and inspire collective action.

The team works closely with local communities, schools, and international partners. They currently have two separate beach cleanup coordination areas; one in Húsavík, and the second one in Akureyri since 2023.

Accomplishments

In just a few years, Ocean Missions has built a strong reputation for bridging the gap between science and the public. Key achievements include:

  • Marine litter expeditions that combine data collection with direct cleanup efforts along remote Icelandic coastlines
  • Youth engagement: in both beach cleanup areas, students and young foreigners are the main participants in those efforts. Youth engagement is also done through connecting with local schools and the Akureyri municipal library
  • Partnerships with whale watching companies: North Sailing in Húsavík and Elding Whale Watching in Akureyri have been partners in the beach cleanup efforts, promoting the events and having their employees join in the efforts
  • Public outreach through presentations, workshops, art collaborations, and local events that connect science with culture
  • First Hope Spot in Iceland: In 2023, Mission Blue, led by Her Deepness Dr. Sylvia Earle, has declared the Northeast Icelandic area between Grimsey, Akureyri and Húsavík as the first Hope Spot in Iceland, after Ocean Missions‘ nomination.

Through these activities, Ocean Missions has not only collected valuable data but also fostered a growing network of ocean advocates in Iceland and abroad.

Research

Scientific research is at the heart of Ocean Missions. Their team focuses particularly on:

  • Marine litter monitoring: documenting types and distribution of plastic and other debris in the North of Iceland
  • Microplastic sampling: analysing seawater through mantatrawling, to understand how deeply microplastics have penetrated Arctic ecosystems
  • Citizen science methods: those two efforts are supported by regular citizens which gives individuals great insights into how everyone can contribute to science and global efforts

By combining traditional scientific approaches with innovative citizen engagement, Ocean Missions helps ensure that Arctic conservation is rooted both in solid evidence and in community participation.
